Fat Tuesdays

Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. It is considered a celebratory holiday to predate a religious fast. The fast lasts for 40 days, and many people traditionally give up at least one thing. The fast includes giving up meat, abstinence, alcohol, or whatever else a person chooses. Fat Tuesday is also known as Mardi Gras, and it is widely celebrated in New Orleans. In America, we celebrate Mardi Gras as one giant party. It includes parades, colorful decorations, and the good old American tradition of getting black-out wasted. Since it’s most people’s last day to enjoy their vices, many like to go all out for a giant celebration. Having the willpower to fast for 40 days is tough, so a preemptive celebration is most people’s way of getting through it.

How Do I Celebrate Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is a festive, happy go-lucky holiday. People enjoy dressing up, wearing feathers, beads, and bright colors. Most cities throw a parade, and most restaurants take advantage of the festivities with special menus or discounts. To celebrate Mardi Gras, hit the town, and have fun! Are you participating in the fasting afterwards? Most people celebrate Fat Tuesday by binging on their vices. This is a good way to drink or eat your fill before giving it up for 40 days. The point is to have fun and get your fill before lent. Even if you are not fasting, joining in on the celebration makes it more fun for everyone. There is no harm in taking a day of fun and turning it into what you want. Whether you are in the heart of the celebration in New Orleans or elsewhere, there are plenty of things to do in celebration of Mardi Gras.
